"Restorative Justice is a Tool to Rebuild the Social Fabric"

In a nutshell

Dr. Márquez highlights the importance of Restorative Justice in strengthening the social fabric and promoting more supportive communities, exemplifying its application in the Liberté Cooperative and in programs that inspire change in hostile environments.

Participation in Restorative Justice

This was stated to Radio Aires de Liberté by Dr. Márquez, who was one of the four people who lectured on the topic of Restorative Justice at the recent University Diploma Course on Paradigms of Citizen Security, a diploma course she coordinates although she is also Secretary of the Cooperative Administration Council of our space and it is also noteworthy that she is president of the Association Victims for Peace.

I believe one of the most important things that happened today is that we were able to have four people who truly work and think about restorative justice.

Reflection and Action Meeting

"Hello Miguel, thank you for this interview. I see it as very important because we are also a large community working on this topic. Even though it may not reach the general public, so to speak, over the years we have seen that these processes are increasingly taking root in communities and experiences, which I think also shows that another way of building is possible."

And we are demonstrating from Cooperativa Liberté, when I say that Liberté is an absolutely restorative space I say it because I live it, because it is daily action, everyday action.

Experience at Cooperativa Liberté

"And so I think that is what gives solidity to knowing and thinking that it is restorative. Even though we are surely in a process and have a long way to go to reach success, I still believe we are on the path toward something that is about recovering the social fabric, moving away from individualistic positions and realizing that we are all in community, bigger or smaller, but we live in community and we live intertwined."

The truth is that what the diploma course we are carrying out has is that every time we think about the topics we generally have the opportunity to have the best in each subject and that is also a source of pride because these are people who give their time, their presence, people who travel voluntarily, they are here because they believe in the Liberté project, they feel part of this project and because the Liberté project and model is truly a beacon for the prison system but also beyond the prison system because it is for the community.

Project as a Community Example

"If it can be done here, from prison, one of the most hostile and inhospitable environments, probably, I have no doubt, it can be done anywhere else."

Even though we are surely in a process and have a long way to go to reach success, I still believe we are on the path toward something that is about recovering the social fabric, moving away from individualistic positions and realizing that we are all in community, bigger or smaller, but we live in community and we live intertwined.— Dr. Márquez
