Charming and thoughtful visit from a former Liberté member

In a nutshell

A former incarcerated person at Liberté celebrates the growth of the self-managed space run by people in prison, highlighting their transformation and the importance of family and community support in their reintegration process, conveying a message of hope for those still serving sentences.

He recalled his time there and expressed his pleasant surprise at the growth of the self-managed space run by people in prison.

Reunion and emotions

He arrived mid-morning and, upon being welcomed, greeted everyone who was there at that hour in the cooperative space, visibly moved by the reunion with those with whom he had shared experiences not only related to prison life but also to the self-managed space that had once embraced him.

Benefits and visits

He shares that he was able to leave prison after receiving the benefit of an ankle bracelet and later was able to start working.

Today he already has the benefit of free movement and did not miss the opportunity to visit Liberté, where he was interviewed and his account will be included in the pages of the book that will tell the history of what is today a cooperative.

Memories of arrival and growth

He did not let pass the moment of his entry into prison as a detainee, recalling that although those were grey times in his life, he also managed to find himself facing actions that can well be described as positive, and his time at Liberté stands out among them.

He looks around and is pleasantly surprised to notice the growth of the space compared to the times when everything was very hard to come by — like being able to eat a chocolate bar or drink a soda — remarking that today that is indeed possible through the service provided by the Liberté store.

Tour of the facilities

He continues reminiscing while also taking in the installed deli counter, again remarking on how difficult it was to achieve this — a sentiment supported by the account of the person who first welcomed him to Liberté when it was only an arts and crafts workshop, pampa, with whom, along with another companion, Ariel, they carry out a brief tour of the facilities that are new to pepo, who cannot stop marveling at the work that has been done.

Future plans and a message of hope

We asked him a few more things and, moving into his more personal life, he repeatedly shares that when he got out, the affection shown to him by his family, neighbors, and friends was very important, and he tells us that once his sentence is fully served, he already plans to return to his former trade: merchant seamanship.

We said our goodbyes and he left a message of hope, grounded in his own testimony, for those who today remain anchored in sentences handed down by the justice system, serving them inside prison, and he said:

Have empathy and be a good companion, hold on as long as possible because the day of freedom comes.— cooperativaLiberté
